Lest fashion ever be mistaken for merely a series of beautiful and covetable items of clothing, there are always a few avant-garde designers who provoke the question, “What was (s)he thinking?” (Yes, my dear skeptical fellow academics, thinking.) This season Yohji Yamamoto’s first look, a long coat, rolling suitcase, headwrap, and even boots splashed with a logo that was suspiciously but not completely familiar, was clearly a text to be deconstructed. But what was the message? A not-so-subtle dig at corporate power? A comment on consumerism? A nod to the ubiquity of the Louis Vuitton brand, even to the furthest traveled points on the globe? And isn’t the form of reference itself a bit recursive? Only the toile will tell. Setting questions of deeper meaning aside for the moment, can he do that? That is to say, will Yohji’s next design experiment involve classic prison stripes or orange jumpsuits? If Yamamoto were an unknown copyist instead of an internationally renowned designer producing an expensive collection, or if he had left his own “YY” initials out of the pattern, he might very well find police instead of buyers waiting back in the showroom. The pattern, which he used in multiple looks, is so similar to the LV Monogram toile that absolutely noone in his audience could miss the reference — but then, his own YY’s are iconic in their own right. Moreover, the publicity generated by this collection may serve to diffuse any likelihood of confusion, at least among the fashion-conscious consumers most likely to buy either label. Still, unless you are a darling of the fashion intelligensia, don’t try this at home. And even if you are, make sure you keep your attorney on speed dial. (via Counterfeit Chic)
Yohji Yamamoto + Mandarina Duck = Y’s Mandarina Yohji Yamamoto has joined forces with Italian luggage designer Mandarina Duck to create a 48-piece collection of limited edition bags, travel goods and luggage that are set to make a smashing debut this spring in showrooms located in fashion hot spots Milan, Paris, Antwerp, Tokyo and New York. The collection, which will be filled under the name Y’s Mandarina will be divided into two divisions, Y and M. The Y division will feature avant-garde designs such as a hybrid hood-sleeve bag, while the M Division offers a more practical range of wallets, dopp kits, duffels, and suitcases that combine Mandarina Duck’s signature leathers and nylons. Y’s Mandarina prices range from $100 for a leather key holder to $680 for a trolley suitcase. Yohji Yamamoto Jeans + Y-3 Clothing The Yohji Yamamoto Y-3 Autumn 2007 Collection released at Hunter College’s basketball court didn’t go down like a Magic Johnson baloncesto covered in vasoline but that’s not what Yohji’s about. The man likes to design in the hinterland where corporate mentality and regimented style fear to tread. The Y-3 Autumn 2007 Collection is poetry in clothe: The big and baggy sweat pants, the over-sized sweaters, the cropped biker jackers… all have an odd but engaging sense of fashion. The word on the vine is that Yohji Yamamoto jeans are also destined to cause a stir in 2007. (via Yohji Yamamoto Jeans + Y-3 Clothing | Kitmeout)
Yohji Yamamoto White Boot | SneakerNews.comn addition to the Y-3 store that Adidas and Yohji Yamamoto opened in the Meatpacking District of New York, Yohji Yamamoto opened his own flagship store across the street. The store features an array of pieces from Yamamoto and one of the eye catching products was this White Boots from the Japanese designer. The all White boot features premium leather mixed with perforated mesh fabric for the upper and the finishing touch is Yamamoto’s signature on the tongue.
